Description
55 cm 21 ½" diameter re-purposed from dress or bed covers. Three circles inner one is 18 cm 7" diameter consisting of a rectangular piece 15.3 cm x 11 cm 6" x 4" wide with additional fabric machine stitched to complete the circular shape. Middle piece is made from 2 pieces 5 cm 2 1/8" wide and together 87 cm 34" long gathered to fit the inner piece and machine stitched to middle. Outer piece is 14 cm 5 ½" wide 70 cm 6" long consisting of 4 parts hand stitched together then machine stitched to middle piece. Lined with 1 piece of cotton likely hand loomed and machine stitched to front. Embroidery is done with multicolored cotton, predominately red. Item is soiled, some colour bleeding, some missing threads. Small label "Greece round cushion cover 22 18 encircled 7 " attached with a safety pin, small label "Dorita E Grant" removed, small pink tape stitched on back;collected in Greece by Mary Ellen Palin "Nellie" between 1910 and 1927 while she was English governess to Lavria Averof;displayed in black case B
