Description
Icon painted on wood in the Byzantine style in a Georgian Monastery ca. 1500 CE While Georgia was part of the USSR the icon arrived in Israel.
label on back "Victoria Souvenires (sic) Bazaar, Elias M. Tubbeh & Sons" ;purchased in Jerusalem in 1976 by Dr. Eric and Clara Belle Webb and donated to The Victoria & Vancouver Island Greek Community Society. Hung in church until the artist who was installing the iconography in the church noticed it and suggested it needed a more secure place. Hung in Michael Ikonomou's office until a secure option was found in the museum August 2013. Dr. Eva Baboula, Byzantine specialist at Uvic History in Art department suggests it might be late 17th or early 18th century.
