Description
Terracotta (or red clay) molded upright acanthus leaf with female face in center 22.5 x 13 cm 9" tall 5" at widest part- back of design is where it was attached to the roof some remnants of cement remain from original installation. Age unknown.  It's function was to block the end of the curved roof tiles and add ornamentation.;discovered during the excavation of the Stoa of Atalus in the AGORA or Market place in Athens in the 1950's by the American school of Classical Studies. Kept by Mary and Willie Eliot and eventually given to donor, Mary Webb. During the reconstruction of the Stoa several grad students used a copy of a waterspout similar to this piece and 2 days of experimentation determined the optimal angle at which to install the water spouts to ensure the water fell away from the building;displayed in a window in the museum with a descriptive page
